An air conditioner can run and blow cool air, yet still be too small for your house. When cooling equipment does not have enough capacity for the home, it may run for hours without reaching the thermostat setting. Rooms stay warm, humidity rises, and energy bills climb even though the AC rarely shuts off.

This becomes especially noticeable during extreme Texas heat, when an undersized unit has little room to recover. Understanding the signs can help you determine whether the issue calls for repair, airflow improvements, or a properly sized AC replacement.

Why AC Size Matters
